It is said that chronic inflammation is the root of all degenerative disease; cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s. These diverse diseases are seeded with inflammation.
Inflammation is normally a mechanism of a healthy immune response in healing injury and fighting infection. The negative side effect of inflammation occurs when something kick starts the immune system and disengages the rest and digest mechanism in our autonomic nervous system. Like an unattained fire, chronic inflammation can slowly spread and lead to serious imbalances that negatively affect the chances of long term health.
Most individuals do not realize that chronic inflammation usually starts in the digestive tract, because, most modern day doctors do not monitor this. Two-thirds of the body’s defenses reside in the GI tract. Inflammation in the GI tract causes everything from acid reflux and heartburn to intestinal bloating. Frequent bouts of diarrhea, constipation, gas and bloating are imbalances that lead to long term digestion problems, such as; celiac disease, spastic colon, colitis and cancer of the stomach, colon or digestive track.
The list of negative side affects of inflammation aren’t just segregated to gut imbalances. Inflammation also causes immune system imbalances, as well as bone and tendon problems that can lead to osteoporosis and tendonitis. Inflammation also causes an over active immune system which can manifest as allergies, asthma, and sinusitis.
Inflammation causes skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and systemic candidiasis can be caused from inflammation. Inflammation affects the nervous system causing a wide range of chronic diseases that are not limited to fibromyalgia, gingivitis, heart disease, hepatitis, diabetes and cancer.

Incorporating dark leafy greens such as: bok choy, kale, collards, spinach, dandelion, swiss chard, arugula, mustard greens, endive and escarole are all helpful in reducing and eliminating chronic inflammation. Greens are also rich in Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Vitamin K Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and many other B vitamins. Greens provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin which help in preventing inflammation.
Adding: fruits, nuts and seeds, quinoa, flax seeds, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower seeds, avocados, strawberries, cauliflower, garlic, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and brussel sprouts are also great to incorporate into a diet geared for reducing inflammation.
