The adrenals are part of our endocrine system which, allows us to respond to stress appropriately. They also secretes a number of hormones. The adrenals are small glands located above each kidney. The inner part of the glands are called the medulla, they produces epinephrine and norepinephrine.
The outer cortex of the adrenals produce hormones called cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, androstenedione, and estrogens.
The adrenals give us strength to respond to stress by pumping adrenalin and cortisol throughout the body. This is an innate response which, everyone is born with for survival purposes. It’s called fight, flight, or freeze.
A Dr. James L . Wilson coined the name Adrenal Fatigue only a little over a decades ago. He identified adrenal fatigue was a specific kind of tiredness which effects individuals frequent, persistent or severe mentally, emotionally, psychologically or/and physically.
Anyone is susceptible to developing adrenal fatigue because, anyone can suffer from prolonged stress.
An illness, life crisis, or any continuing difficult situations can cause the adrenals to work overtime. However, life style habits, poor diet, substance abuse, chronic illness and repeated infections such as bronchitis and the flu contribute to the development of adrenal fatigue.
The physiological side affects of having adrenal fatigue are many because, our adrenals are in charge of our hormones. low cortisol, blood pressure, body temperature are all manifestations of hormonal imbalances.
Having too much or too little cortisol weakens the immune system or causes an overactive immune system. Having good adrenal health is linked too long longevity for this reason.
Some myths around adrenal fatigue are , individuals who suffer from adrenal fatigue can’t work and have no energy. Millions of people work with adrenal fatigue everyday. They just get sick more often and have become dependent on caffeine, sugar and other addictive substances and chemicals to counteract the physical and energetic feelings that come from adrenal fatigue.
A few other myths about adrenal fatigue are, adult adrenal fatigue affects men more than woman and children. In today’s modern world, nothing is further from the truth. Woman are more prone to developing adrenal fatigue and more and more children are diagnosed with having It.
Todays women have a tremendous amount of responsibilities, between, raising children, and hormonal changes as woman get older it is not surprising the number of woman that develop adrenal fatigue out weighs men.
Many children today are being born nutritionally depleted and even toxic as a result of their mothers having adrenal fatigue.
Some manifestations children develop from having adrenal fatigue are; chronic ear infections, infections, delayed development, learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, brain fog, anti social behavior, and minimal brain dysfunction.
Unfortunately, our modern day medical doesn’t treat the adrenal fatigue in our adults or children. They try to treat the manifestation caused from having adrenal fatigue instead, so many times the health regiment is unsuccessful.
Fortunately through a combination of holistic and spiritual treatments adrenal fatigue is curable.
A lifestyle with plenty of rest , a diet of whole foods high in fiber and including personalized supplements are helpful but,are not nearly enough so I have included some of my personal generalized recommendations.
Before starting any regiment it’s best to consult with a certified holistic health coach or nutritionalist since everyones needs and response differentiate.
